Cremna was an important Roman colony established in a strategic location on the northern foothills of the Taurus Mountains, in the ancient region of Pisidia. It particularly distinguished itself as a military and administrative center during the Roman Imperial period, entering history with the great siege it endured in the 3rd century CE. Today, its remains are located within the borders of modern Turkey, near the Bucak district of Burdur province.

History

While definitive information about Cremna's early history is limited, it is generally known that the region was inhabited by Pisidian tribes from the 1st millennium BCE onwards. The event that brought the city to its most flourishing period was its acquisition of colonial status during the Roman Empire. The title "Colonia Iulia Augusta Felix Cremna" suggests that the city was founded during the reign of Emperor Augustus or Tiberius, and had strong ties to the imperial family. The purpose of establishing this colony is interpreted as solidifying Roman authority in the mountainous region of Pisidia and keeping the occasionally rebellious local tribes under control.

One of the most dramatic events in the city's history was the great siege it experienced in the 3rd century CE, during the reign of Emperor Aurelian (270-275 CE) or, according to a more widely accepted view, during the reign of Emperor Probus (276-282 CE). Cremna became a stronghold for Lydius, a rebellious leader in the region, and a symbol of resistance against the Roman Empire. Following a long and arduous siege, Lydius's men were forced to surrender after the city's water supply was cut off, and Cremna was captured. This event clearly demonstrated the city's strategic importance and defensive capabilities. Although the city was rebuilt after the siege, it gradually lost its importance during the Late Antique and Byzantine periods, eventually diminishing into a small settlement.

Geographic Location

Cremna is situated on a steep plateau within the borders of modern Burdur province's Bucak district, near Çamlık village, in the western extensions of the Taurus Mountains. This strategic location, approximately 1200 meters above sea level, provided the city with a natural defensive advantage. The deep valleys and passes surrounding it made access to the city difficult, while also offering the opportunity to control a vast hinterland and trade routes.

The city's elevated and protected position distinguished it from other important cities in Pisidia, particularly centers like Termessos to the west, Sagalassos to the north, and Selge to the southeast. This geographical isolation, while strengthening the city's defenses, also led it to play a unique role in regional trade and cultural interaction. Nearby water sources and small plains, though not highly fertile, were suitable for agriculture and provided the basic means for the city's survival.

Significance in Antiquity

Cremna stood out in antiquity particularly for its military and administrative character. As a Roman colony, it served as a representative and outpost of the Empire's authority in the mountainous region of Pisidia. Consolidating Roman rule in the region and keeping the occasionally rebellious local populace under control were among the city's primary strategic missions. The siege in the 3rd century CE is the most striking evidence of this military importance.

Administratively, due to its colonial status, Cremna was an important center for the dissemination of Roman law, administrative systems, and cultural values in the region. Roman citizens were settled here, and typical Roman public buildings were constructed in the city. Economically, thanks to its strategic location, it may have functioned as a control point on the surrounding trade routes. Local agricultural products and animal husbandry contributed to the city's economy, but its mountainous geography may have limited large-scale commercial activities. In cultural and religious life, temples dedicated to Roman gods and traces of the Roman way of life were present in the city.

Coinage

Cremna is an ancient mint represented in the NumisTR database by 8 coin varieties. The recorded coins were struck in bronze and silver. You can browse the city's coins in the Pisidia coins list.

Archaeological Remains

The archaeological remains of Cremna that survive to this day bear the traces of the city's former splendor and strategic importance. Within the city, located on a high plateau, defensive structures are particularly noteworthy. The city walls, extending over a large area, reveal the city's strong fortifications. Furthermore, traces of typical Roman urban structures such as an ancient theater, agora (marketplace), temple remains, basilica, aqueducts, and a necropolis are also present.

The siege in the 3rd century CE may have caused destruction to some of the city's structures, but subsequent repairs and reconstructions are also observable in the archaeological layers. Many of the remains stand partially intact, providing visitors with information about the city's layout. However, due to the challenging geography of the region and limited archaeological work, all of Cremna's secrets have not yet been fully revealed. The remains are intertwined with natural vegetation and the erosive effects of time, yet they clearly present the vestiges of the ancient world.

Today

The ancient city of Cremna is located today within the borders of modern Burdur province's Bucak district, near Çamlık village. Access to the city's remains is provided by road. It is a site that can generally be visited by private vehicles or through local tours. Access to the region can be organized from Bucak district center or Burdur city center. While Cremna is not yet a large-scale tourist center, it is an important ancient heritage site awaiting discovery by archaeology enthusiasts, researchers, and hikers. Visitors have the opportunity to experience the city's strategic location and impressive remains in a natural setting.
