PISIDIA

Pisidia, a mountainous and rugged inland region north of Lycia, was known in antiquity for its warlike peoples, difficult to control. This geographical isolation led the cities of Pisidia to adopt Hellenistic culture and coinage later than their neighbors in Western Anatolia.

Mints of Pisidia

Over 30 mints have been identified in the region. Among these, Adada, Amblada, Antiocheia (Yalvaç), Ariassos, Kremna, Sagalassos, Selge, and Termessos Major stand out.

Mint Focus: Selge

Selge, one of Pisidia's most important and earliest coin-issuing cities, reflected its independent and warlike character on its coinage. Its coins frequently depict wrestling scenes similar to those of Aspendos, or the head of the mythological hero Herakles. This iconography points to the city's military strength and its interaction with the Greek cultural world. Furthermore, local motifs such as the Gorgon's head and a slinger are also distinctive features of Selge's coinage.
