Oluz Höyük is an important tell settlement located in Amasya province, Turkey, possessing a rich history spanning from prehistoric periods to the Hellenistic era. Inhabited from the Early Bronze Age, with its initial settlement beginning around 4500 BCE, the tell was abandoned during the Hittite period, subsequently experiencing brief re-settlements during the Iron Age and Hellenistic periods. This multi-layered settlement offers valuable archaeological data concerning the development of Anatolia's ancient civilizations.
History
The history of Oluz Höyük extends back to approximately 4500 BCE, corresponding to the initial phases of the Early Bronze Age. During this period, Anatolia was a significant geographical region experiencing the transition to settled life and early urbanization processes, alongside the development of agriculture and animal husbandry. The tell witnessed continuous occupation throughout the Early Bronze Age, playing an active role in the cultural and economic dynamics of the region. In these early periods, Oluz Höyük was likely a central hub, sustained by the fertile lands surrounding it and housing an organized societal structure.
However, it appears that Oluz Höyük was abandoned for unknown reasons between the 15th and 13th centuries BCE, a period during which the powerful Hittite Empire held sway. Various factors, such as regional conflicts, economic collapses, or natural disasters, may lie behind this abandonment. The tell remained uninhabited for a long period, witnessing the great transformations of the ancient world. From approximately the 8th century BCE, at the beginning of the Iron Age, Oluz Höyük began to be re-inhabited, experiencing limited settlement until the late Hellenistic period, specifically the 1st century BCE. This second period of settlement coincides with a process characterized by the rise of great empires in Anatolia and the spread of Hellenic culture. During this period, Oluz Höyük may have functioned as a smaller-scale settlement or a strategic outpost, rather than a regional center.
Geographic Location
Oluz Höyük is located within the borders of the present-day Republic of Turkey's Amasya province, southeast of the Amasya city center. Geographically, it is situated in the interior parts of the Black Sea Region, close to the fertile lands of the Yeşilırmak Basin. This strategic location indicates that the tell was not only a favorable area for agricultural activities throughout history but also occupied a significant point along natural passes and potential trade routes in the region. Its location in the interior regions of Amasya may have allowed the tell to serve as a bridge connecting both the Black Sea coastline and the major centers of Central Anatolia.
Oluz Höyük's proximity to natural resources, access to water sources, and fertile agricultural lands played a key role in the settlement's longevity. Although definitive information regarding its relations with neighboring ancient cities is limited, considering Amasya's historical importance, Oluz Höyük is thought to have been part of a regional network. This location, especially during the re-settlement processes in the Iron Age and Hellenistic periods, suggests new
