Arykanda, an ancient city strategically located and surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, was built on steep mountain slopes of Lycia, at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters, in a series of terraces. This city, one of the Lycian League members with a single vote, was renowned in antiquity for its penchant for luxury and its debts. It has survived to the present day with monumental structures such as a well-preserved odeon, bath complex, stadium, and rock-cut tombs.

History

The history of Arykanda extends back to the 2nd millennium BCE, as evidenced by its name ending with the Luwian suffix "-anda." This linguistic feature indicates that the city was inhabited by indigenous Anatolian peoples even before the Lycians and Greeks. The city's earliest written records date to the 4th century BCE, and it reached its peak during the period when it was an important member of the Lycian League. Arykanda, which joined the Lycian League established in 168 BCE with a single vote, played an active role in the political and economic life of the league.

Arykanda maintained its existence and importance during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, experiencing great prosperity particularly during the Roman Empire. During this period, the city became famous for the luxurious lifestyles of its wealthy citizens and their accumulated debts. The city's social and cultural structure is also revealed by its monumental structures that have survived to the present day. In the 5th century CE, after the division of the Roman Empire, Arykanda came under the rule of the Byzantine Empire, and during this period, influenced by Christianity, it constructed new buildings and continued its existence. The basilica built in the 6th century CE, in particular, testifies to the city's vitality during the Byzantine period. However, it is believed that the city gradually began to be abandoned from the 7th century CE due to Arab raids and natural disasters.

Geographic Location

Arykanda boasts one of the most dramatic and impressive geographic locations in the Lycian region. Located within the provincial borders of Antalya, near the modern village of Arif, the city was built on a steep mountain slope, approximately 1,000 meters above sea level. The city's structures were constructed in terraces to adapt to the sloping terrain. This high and rugged location provided the city with both a natural defensive advantage and offered expansive, breathtaking valley views stretching towards the Mediterranean.

Although Arykanda's strategic location was not on the main connecting routes between Lycia's interior and its coastline, it enabled the city to become an important center within its own region. The fertile mountain slopes surrounding it may have provided suitable areas for agriculture and animal husbandry. This isolated yet impressive location offered its inhabitants both security and the opportunity for a life amidst natural beauty. Its relations with neighboring cities were shaped within the framework of its Lycian League membership, but direct access routes were challenging due to the mountainous terrain.

Significance in Antiquity

In antiquity, Arykanda held a unique position in the Lycian region, both politically and culturally. The city's membership in the Lycian League with a single vote indicates that it had a say in the league's political decisions and held a certain weight in regional balances. This membership is an important indicator of the city's integration into Lycia's overall political and economic structure.

Economically, Arykanda's high elevation and limited agricultural areas may have led to a diversification of the city's livelihoods. Activities such as forest products or animal husbandry from the mountainous regions may have played a significant role in its economy. However, the city's primary fame is associated with its citizens' "penchant for luxury" and the resulting "indebtedness." This situation suggests that Arykanda had reached a certain level of prosperity and that its inhabitants tended to display their wealth through an ostentatious lifestyle. This luxurious lifestyle offers interesting clues about the city's social structure and cultural values. The city's artistic and architectural achievements also underscore its importance. Structures such as the well-preserved odeon, bath complex, and stadium prove that Arykanda had a developed urban life and a strong social structure.

Coinage

Arykanda is an ancient mint represented in the NumisTR database by 4 coin varieties. The recorded coins were struck in bronze. Authorities named on the coins include Lycian League. You can browse the city's coins in the Lycia coins list.

Archaeological Remains

Arykanda stands out for the extraordinary level of preservation of its surviving remains and its architecture skillfully integrated into the steep mountainous terrain. One of the city's most important structures is the odeon, which has survived to the present day in remarkably good condition. This structure, used for musical and theatrical performances, reflects the vibrancy of the city's cultural life. The city also features a bath complex with hot and cold sections, a stadium where athletic events were held, and remains of an agora (market).

One of Arykanda's most striking features is the numerous rock-cut tombs carved into the slopes. These tombs belong to different periods and showcase beautiful examples of Lycia's unique funerary architecture. On the upper terraces of the city, there is a well-preserved basilica dating to the Byzantine period. This basilica demonstrates the city's importance and architectural development during the Christian era. Furthermore, the city's general settlement plan, with its terraced structures rising upwards, is an impressive example of ancient engineering skills.
