TROAS

The region of Troas, immortalized by Homer's Iliad, is strategically located in the northwest of Anatolia. In antiquity, this region, where at least 25 different mints were active, including the island of Tenedos (Bozcaada), held great importance from both a mythological and commercial perspective.

Among the important mints in the region are Abydus, Achilleion, Alexandria Troas, Antandrus, Assus, Dardanos, Gargara, Ilium (Troy), Kebren, Sigeion, and Tenedos.44

Alexandria Troas

This city, founded or renamed by Alexander the Great, served as an important port and trade center during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Its coinage typically depicts Apollo, considered the city's patron deity. The obverse features a laureate bust of Apollo, while the reverse displays symbols associated with the god, such as a grazing horse or a lyre. Coins of Alexandria Troas have been found across a wide geographical area, serving as evidence of the extensive trade network in the region.
