Located within the western Taurus Mountains of ancient Anatolia, specifically within the borders of modern-day Antalya province, Äußerer Westtaurus is a settlement notable for its mountainous geography. Its position on strategic transit routes and proximity to natural resources attracted the interest of various civilizations throughout history. This settlement represents a significant point in the interaction between the regions of Pisidia and Pamphylia.

History

While the exact foundation date of Äußerer Westtaurus remains uncertain, general archaeological data suggest the presence of settlement in this part of the Western Taurus from the 2nd millennium BCE onwards. Particularly in the 1st millennium BCE, the region became the homeland of the Pisidian peoples, known for their love of independence. With the expansion of the Persian Empire into Anatolia, Äußerer Westtaurus and its environs also came under Persian rule, though they largely maintained their local autonomy due to the mountainous terrain. Following the conquests of Alexander the Great, Hellenistic kingdoms, especially the Seleucids and the Kingdom of Pergamon, sought to establish dominance over the region. With the arrival of the Roman Empire in Anatolia, Äußerer Westtaurus became part of the Roman provincial system from the 1st century BCE, although Roman control in the area generally remained limited to strategic routes and important cities. During this period, the city may have experienced some prosperity under the Pax Romana. It continued to exist during the Byzantine period but gradually lost its significance over time.

Geographic Location

As its name suggests, Äußerer Westtaurus is situated in the outer reaches of the Western Taurus Mountains, in the northwestern interior regions of modern-day Antalya province, at coordinates 37.25 latitude and 30.25 longitude. This mountainous geography ensured the city's strategic location. Its position at the intersection of routes leading north to the Pisidian plateau and south to the Pamphylian coastline and Lycia made Äußerer Westtaurus significant for both trade and military purposes. Fertile valley floors nestled among high-altitude mountains provided suitable areas for agriculture, while surrounding forests supplied natural resources such as timber. Although this location made external connections challenging, it also offered a natural defensive advantage.

Significance in Antiquity

The significance of Äußerer Westtaurus in antiquity largely stemmed from its geographic location. The city likely functioned as a control point on important passes within the challenging terrain of the Western Taurus, connecting the interior regions with the southern coastline. This position allowed the city to control both local trade routes
