Bahçecik is an ancient settlement located within the modern-day Sur district of Diyarbakır province. In the 8th century BCE, Urartian King Sarduri constructed a strategically important tower temple and a fortress named "Sarduriḫinili." With these structures, it became a significant indicator of Urartian dominance in the region.

History

The history of Bahçecik dates back particularly to the 8th century BCE, during the period of the Urartian Kingdom. Urartian King Sarduri (generally referred to as Sarduri II) had significant structures built in this region to establish a strong military and religious presence. Among these are a fortress named "Sarduriḫinili," which played a key role in the defense and control of the region, and a tower temple of religious significance. These construction activities are considered part of Urartu's expansionist policies in the Upper Tigris basin and its efforts to secure its borders. Following Urartian rule, the region came under the influence of the Assyrian Empire, and subsequently passed into the control of different civilizations during the Achaemenid, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. However, Bahçecik's most prominent and documented ancient period is its connection with the Urartian Kingdom. Due to its strategic location, it served as an attractive settlement for various powers throughout antiquity.

Geographic Location

Bahçecik is currently located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region, within the borders of the Sur district of Diyarbakır province, in the upper basin of the Tigris River. Its coordinates are 37.891952 latitude and 40.447583 longitude. This location held strategic value in antiquity due to its position at an important crossing point between Mesopotamia and Anatolia. Its proximity to the fertile Tigris plain enhanced its agricultural potential, while its location on trade and military routes also gave it regional significance. Bahçecik is also notable for its proximity to important centers of the period, such as Amida (Diyarbakır), which reinforced its place within the regional administration and defense network.

Significance in Antiquity

Bahçecik's significance in antiquity is largely linked to the strategic presence of the Urartian Kingdom in the region. The "Sarduriḫinili" fortress, built by Urartian King Sarduri, served the purpose of protecting the kingdom's southern borders and solidifying its dominance in the region. This fortress functioned as both a military outpost and an administrative center, ensuring control over the surrounding agricultural lands and potential trade routes. The tower temple built alongside the fortress indicates that the settlement also held importance as a religious center. This temple was a place where rituals dedicated to the Urartian pantheon were performed, playing a central role in the religious life of the local populace. With these characteristics, Bahçecik stood out as a tangible indicator of Urartu's regional power and cultural influence.

Coinage

No coins from this settlement are recorded in the NumisTR database. In antiquity, coinage was typically undertaken by major commercial centers, capitals, or independent city-states. Given Bahçecik's known role primarily as a military fortress and a religious center, it is believed not to have possessed the authority to strike its own coins. Commercial activities in the region were likely conducted through coins minted in larger nearby centers.

Archaeological Remains

Today, traces of ancient Urartian settlement remains are found at the Bahçecik locality. Architectural elements belonging to the Sarduriḫinili fortress and the tower temple, built in the 8th century BCE, have either been buried over time or are visible on the surface as scattered stone heaps.
