Çamlıdere

Modern Çamlıdere is the name of a settlement whose identity in antiquity remains unknown but which held regional significance. History

The settlement of Çamlıdere, whose ancient name has not survived to the present day, represents a riddle not yet fully elucidated by historians and archaeologists. While definitive information regarding the city's foundation is lacking, its attraction to major powers in the region during the Hellenistic period suggests it held a certain importance from early times. Changes in the political balance in Anatolia from the 3rd century BCE onwards also shaped Çamlıdere's destiny. The city may have initially been within the sphere of influence of the Egypt-based Ptolemaic Kingdom during this period. Subsequently, with the expansion of Rhodes, a powerful maritime and trading state, into Anatolia, it can be assumed that Çamlıdere came under Rhodian suzerainty or at least fell under Rhodes' economic and political influence.

In the later stages of the Hellenistic period, as the Attalid Kingdom, centered in Pergamon and another rising power in Anatolia, increased its dominance in the region, it is probable that Çamlıdere also came under Attalid control. These multiple claims of sovereignty indicate that the city was valuable to different powers due to its strategic location or its resources. One of the most significant turning points for Çamlıdere's history is the revolt initiated by Aristonikos against Rome, which emerged after Attalos III bequeathed his kingdom to Rome in 133 BCE. During this major conflict, Çamlıdere sided with Rome as an ally. This alliance demonstrates that the city held a certain weight in regional politics and was able to establish direct relations with Rome. After this period, with the increasing hegemony of the Roman Empire in Anatolia, it can be assumed that Çamlıdere was also integrated into the Roman administrative structure, although precise information about this process and subsequent details is still limited.
