History

However, the Caria and Ionia regions where it is located are among Anatolia's oldest and most dynamic settlement areas, having been situated on the western borders of the Hittite Empire from the 2nd millennium BCE onwards, and later witnessing Mycenaean influence and the interaction of various Anatolian peoples with Greek colonists. This ambiguity of the city's name may indicate that it was rarely mentioned in ancient texts or was known by different names. From the 7th century BCE onwards, the region came under the dominion of the powerful Lydian Kingdom, followed by the Persian Empire in the 6th century BCE. During the Classical period, particularly with the Ionian cities' inclusion in the Delian League and Caria's governance by satrapies loyal to the Persian Empire, the region experienced intense political and cultural interaction.
