Atarneus sub Pitanem, an ancient settlement located in the Aiolis region of Western Anatolia, in the immediate vicinity of Pitane, held strategic importance in antiquity. The city, particularly associated with prominent figures such as Hermias in the 4th century BCE, was an integral part of the region's rich historical and cultural fabric. Today, situated within the borders of İzmir province, this ancient city is a significant site reflecting the vibrancy of Anatolia during the Hellenistic period.

History

While the exact foundation date of Atarneus sub Pitanem remains uncertain, considering the general settlement patterns of the region, it may have originated from a Greek colonization or the development of a local settlement towards the mid-to-late 1st millennium BCE. The city rose to prominence in political events, particularly in the 4th century BCE. During this period, Atarneus was known as the administrative center of Hermias, a tyrant in the region under the control of the Persian Empire. Hermias was a student of Plato and a close friend of Aristotle; in fact, Aristotle lived in Atarneus for a time and married Hermias's niece, Pythias. This period marks a time when the city reached its intellectual and political zenith. Following the Persian dominance in the region, Atarneus is believed to have fallen within the sphere of influence of the Kingdom of Pergamon during the Hellenistic period. During the Roman Empire period, it remained overshadowed by larger and more strategic cities in the region but continued to be inhabited. The city's name, "sub Pitanem" (under/near Pitane), also indicates its geographical or administrative connection to the nearby city of Pitane.

Geographic Location

Atarneus sub Pitanem is situated on the fertile coastal strip of Western Anatolia, within the borders of modern Turkey's İzmir province, near the district of Dikili. Located close to the Aegean Sea, the city strategically provided access to important trade routes and agricultural lands. This ancient settlement, with coordinates 38.928313, 26.85959, is located in the southwestern part of the Aiolis region, near Pitane (modern Çandarlı), a larger and more renowned Aiolic city. This geographical proximity suggests that Atarneus was in cultural and economic interaction with Pitane. The region's generally rich agricultural potential and proximity to the sea allowed the city to participate in both land and sea trade in antiquity. The fertile lands surrounding it formed the basis of agricultural production and contributed to the city's economic life.

Significance in Antiquity

The significance of Atarneus sub Pitanem in antiquity is particularly evident through its political and intellectual connections in the 4th century BCE. Under the rule of the tyrant Hermias, the city briefly became an important political and cultural center of the region. The presence and intellectual activities of leading philosophers of the era, such as Aristotle, bestowed unique intellectual prestige upon Atarneus. This intellectual vibrancy during that period distinguished the city from other settlements in the region. Economically, thanks to its proximity to the Aegean Sea and fertile agricultural lands, Atarneus may have played a role in the production and trade of agricultural products. However, its primary role in regional trade
